FAQ
Answers about cost, courts and timing
General answers only. Your situation may differ, so ask us about yours.
What does the first meeting cost?
One flat fee for the hour, which we tell you when you book. You leave with a written list of next steps, and you decide afterward whether to hire us.
How do you bill after that?
Most cases are billed by the hour against a deposit, with a monthly bill that shows the work done. Some simple agreed matters have a flat fee, quoted in writing.
Can my spouse be made to pay my lawyer’s fees?
Sometimes, when one spouse earns much more or the other side caused needless cost. We can tell you whether it’s worth asking in your case.
We live in different states. Where do we file?
It depends on where the children have lived, where each of you lives and whether there’s an existing order. We work that out early, and we can file on either side of the river.
Do I have to see my ex at court?
You may be in the same courtroom, but we can often arrange to wait separately, and mediation can be done in separate rooms or by video.
Who will I talk to when I call?
Our office manager answers in both offices and puts you through to your lawyer, or takes a message for a same-day call back.
Can we meet in the evening?
Yes. Both offices are open until 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and any meeting can be by video.
How long will my case take?
An agreed case can be done within a few months; a contested one can take a year or more. Your written plan gives you a realistic range for yours.
What if the other parent ignores the order?
Keep a simple log of what happened and when, and call us. Courts can enforce parenting time and support, and we’ll tell you which step makes sense first.
